As a commentator who was also a poet, John Arlott was a cricket commentator who was known for rendering some of the most memorable and poetic accounts of the action happening on the cricket field. He was a fine cricket journalist as well. He understood the game of cricket all to well and gave the audience a very analytical account, while maintaining the beautiful poetic touch all along.
John Arlott's quotes soon came to be known as Arlottisms, and a particularly memorable 'Arlottism' is "The stroke of a man knocking a thistle top off with a walking stick." He said this in 1975 when Clive Lloyd hit a big six. This remains as one of the most famous cricket quotes of all time.
Such was his popularity that during his final game as commentator, in 1980, the spectators gave him a standing ovation and joining them were the Australia and England players as well who applauded turning towards the commentary box.
