The Yorkshire County Cricket Club was established at Sheffield in 1863 and the ground served as the county's homeground for many years. However, after the club shifted its headquarters to Headingley, Leeds, the ground saw very little cricket being played, and Yorkshire played their last match at Bramall Lane in 1973.
The ground was used for one test between England and Australia in 1902. England lost the match and it was blamed on bad light at the ground that resulted from the smoke emitted from the nearby factories. The smoke was also a reason why the spectators were less in number. It obviously did not work, and the ground never got a chance to host a second test.
The stadium was always a popular football ground and ever since the disappearance of cricket from the ground, it has been transformed into a full-fledged football ground.
