Bert Oldfield was the Australian wicketkeeper for many years. He made his first-class debut in 1919-20, and his first Test match debut against England in the next season. He was not included in the team on many occasions over the next few years, but emerged as Australia's premium wicket-keeper after the 1924-25 Ashes series. He was a brilliant wicketkeeper who excelled at stumpings. He also seldom gave away byes, which made him a valued member of the squad.

After the 1924-'25 Ashes series, in his entire career he missed just one Test-the fourth Test of the 1932-33 'Bodyline' series. In the third Test, he was hit on the head by Harold Larwood which left him unconscious with a fractured skull. He was however, back for the fifth Test of the series. Oldfield continued with the game for four more years and retired in 1937. He was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year for 1927.
