Bill Woodfull, the cricketer famously nicknamed 'The Rock' for his ability to play defensive cricket, was a former Australian captain and it was during his captaincy that Australia played the infamous Bodyline Ashes series against England. Bill Woodfull was a wonderful batsman and he formed a good partnership with fellow Australian opener Bill Ponsford. He played 35 Tests and scored 2300 runs at an average of 46. He was a gentleman on and off the field. He never commented publicly on the infamous Bodyline series and rather calmly dealt with the situation even though his team members and he himself got injured a number of times. He was a teacher for many years and gave a lot of importance to education. He always maintained that his contribution to education is much more important than any of his contributions to cricket. He even turned down knighthood for his role in cricket and later took an OBE for his service to education.
