Full name Derek Leslie Underwood Born June 8, 1945, Bromley, Kent Died England, Kent Major teams Right-hand bat Batting style Slow-medium left-arm orthodox
Derek Underwood was one of the best spinners of the world. He represented England in 86 Tests and was unlucky to finish on 297 wickets. However he had a very successful career and many a times won matches single handedly for England. This was specially evident in the 1968 Ashes when he famously took four wickets in 27 balls in the concluding half hour of the fifth Test in a rain washed day that almost assured a draw. With his magical bowling spell, England registered a win and leveled the series 1-1. Underwood represented Kent in county cricket. He had a very glorious run with Kent as well and took 2465 first class wickets at an average of 20.28. Derek Underwood could have played some more Tests and added a few more wickets to his name had he not missed out on some international matches owing to his World Series commitments.
