The game of cricket has produced a few legends, and Fred Trueman is undoubtedly one of them. As a cricketer who gave his hundred percent to the game, while constantly being at locked horns with the big-wigs, he was a character to remember. He played just 67 Tests for England, but that was really unfortunate as he deserved to play many more Tests had it not been for his suspension a number of times owing to bad conduct.
Fred Trueman was a master of the game. He became the first cricketer to take 300 wickets in Tests and though that feat has been achieved by many others after him, few have been able to match his average of 21.57 and strike rate of 49.43 . He became a force to reckon with from the moment he stepped onto the cricketing field. On his debut he reduced India to 0 for four. He followed it up with figures of 8 for 31 in his third Test to announce his dominance in pace bowling. He formed a formidable partnership with Brian Statham and the duo were England’s premium strike bowlers.
He played his last Test against New Zealand in 1965 at the Lords. By then he had claimed 307 wickets. He took to commentary after retirement and remained a popular sportscaster for many years.
