Vouched by countless English county cricket bowlers as an awfully good batsman, Graeme Hick could never quite replicate the magic outside the shores of domestic cricket; it was as if he were a tragic hero who had to carry the burden of his greatness in indifferent lands where his magic refused to accompany him.

Graeme Hick’s nemesis was quality fast bowling; though armed with excellent footwork and swordsmanship skill in wielding his bat, Graeme Hick could never ride on pace bowlers without getting tossed away mid way.

It is difficult to say whether the selectors had an undying faith in him or he left them without a choice due to his domestic performances, but Graeme Hick kept moving in and out of the England side for a long time. Graeme Hick ended up playing in 65 test matches and averaged just 31.32- the lowest among English batsmen who have played in so many test matches.

In first class cricket, Graeme Hick’s highest total is 405 not out, which he scored against Somerset in 1988. In 497 first class matches, Graeme Hick has scored 39068 runs at an average of 52.44.
