A man whose greatness was only matched by his modesty, Jack Hobbs was a cricketer extraordinaire. He was known to many as ‘the Master’ and is most easily the greatest English batsman of all time.

Jack Hobbs played in 61 test matches for England and scored 5410 runs at an average of 56.94. His 834 first class matches also earned him a rich haul of 61,760 runs.

Jack Hobbs scored little less than 100 of his 199 centuries after he reached the age of 40. In 1929, at the age of 46, Jack Hobbs became the oldest cricketer to score a century.

Jack Hobbs retired in 1934. He took up cricket journalism as his next vocation. Jack Hobbs was knighted in 1953, thus becoming the first cricketer to receive the honour.

In 2000, a hundred-member panel of renowned cricketers, sat down to choose the Wisden Cricketers of the Century. Jack Hobbs was placed third after Don Bradman and Sir Garfield Sobers with 30 votes.
