Full name John Wisden Born September 5, 1826, Brighton, Sussex Major teams Kent, Middlesex, Sussex Batting style Right-hand bat
Pitted by many as the best all rounder of his time, John Wisden was a short man who was, in no way, short of cricketing genius. He started off as a fast bowler, but later on his pace decreased a little. So accurate was his bowling that in his heydays he took nearly 10 wickets on an average per match. In 1850, in a match against South and North at lords, he took all ten wickets of North. Not just that, every batsman was clean bowled by Wisden, a record that still stands. By the time he stopped playing cricket, he has already claimed 109 first-class wickets at an average of 6.66. He was a good batsman too.
Rheumatism forced him to leave the game at age 37. He is best remembered today as the founder of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
