Full name John Henry Wardle Born January 8, 1923, Ardsley, Yorkshire Major teams England, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire Batting style Left-hand bat Bowling Style Left-arm slow
Considered by many as the greatest spin bowler in the world, Johnny Wardle was an Englishman who played 28 Tests and 412 first class matches. He came into the Yorkshire side after Hedley Verity died in the War. He was an immensely talented bowler and his unique technique left batsmen puzzled. On firm pitches, he could bowl left-arm wrist spinners that turned and bounced much quite sharply. He took a total of 102 Test wickets at an unbelievable average of 20.39. He also took 1846 first class wickets at an even better average of 18.97.
Johnny Wardle was also popular for his batting skills that were quite surprising in that era. He did not play in the normal defensive mode-rather he went after the bowling and scored runs faster than many others.
