Born an Indian prince, K S Ranjitsinhji played Test cricket for England and by doing so became the first Indian to represent England. K S Ranjitsinhji was a magnificent batsman and many who saw him play termed him as the "the Midsummer night's dream of cricket". He was an elegant batsman and contributed heavily to English cricket. He played county cricket for Sussex and made a staggering 24692 runs at an average of over 56. He dominated first class cricket in the late 1890s and early 1900s. He made 72 centuries.
Popularly known as "Ranji", he made his debut for England in 1896. He was again very successful, scoring a century on debut against Australia at Old Trafford. He continued to be a very important part of the English national team and in his 15 international Tests he scored 985 runs at an average of 44.95. Ranji returned to India soon after and took charge as a prince and served his people. He was made Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar on 10 March 1907, and that largely marked the end of his flamboyant cricketing career.
