Being born into a cricketing family, it was only understandable where Len Hutton's interests would lie. He was a keen student of cricket right from the start and worked at honing his batting skills. By the time he made his debut for Yorkshire in1934 at the age of seventeen, he was already an accomplished batsman. Len Hutton's first class debut season went very well, he scored five fifties and a century in fourteen matches. A consistent performance earned him a test berth three years later against the touring New Zealand in 1937. Len Hutton scored his maiden test century in his second test at Old Trafford.

Len Hutton displayed great precocity even in his early years in test cricket. His ability to read the nature of the pitch and adapt his batting approach accordingly accounted for most of his successes. Only a year following his debut, Len Hutton broke Wally Hammond's record of highest test score by an Englishman by scoring 364, the record remains unbroken yet. In 1941, Len Hutton suffered from unfortunate accident, when working as an Army PT instructor he broke his arm. The injury turned out to be career threatening since his left arm was left two inches shorter than his right. Much to the relief of his admirers, the accident failed to have any bearings on his run scoring abilities and Len Hutton continued to exasperate the bowlers around the world.

Post World War, on more few occasions, the entire onus of holding together the weak English batting line up fell upon Len Hutton. The honor of leading his country became his in 1952. The added responsibility did nothing to impair his brilliant performances, which were now executed with more purposeful strides. Ill- health in the form of persistent backache forced Len Hutton to consider retiring, which he ultimately did in 1956. By then he had played in 79 tests and scored 6971 runs at an average of 56.67. Len Hutton played 513 first-class matches and scored 40140 runs that came at an average of 55.51. livescore.warofcricket.com gives information on Len Hutton and other Great Cricket Players.
