Full name Marcus Edward Trescothick Born December 25, 1975, Keynsham, Somerset Major teams England, Somerset Batting style Left-hand bat Bowling styleRight-arm medium Playing roleOpening batsman
Marcus Trescothick has been one of the most prolific run getters for England in the recent past and with him opening the batting for England, the team seems to have found a very dependable batsman to give a good start that is so crucial. He is also an occasional wicketkeeper and a slip fielder par excellence.
Marcus Trescothick has long being playing cricket, having a good 9 years of excellent school cricket to back him. He followed it up with a good first class run and it was here that he was first noticed by the great Duncan Fletcher. Fletcher was the coach of Glamorgan when Marcus Trescothick, playing for Somerset in a match against Glamorgan scored a brilliant hundred while opening the batting. Later on when Fletcher was the England coach and the team needed an opener, he remembered Marcus Trescothick. That was the beginning of a flourishing career for Trescothick. He went on to become a very valuable cricketer and contributed to the team in both versions of the game. He enjoyed some good partnerships with Mike Atherton.
He played 76 Tests and scored nearly 6000 runs at a very healthy average of 44. His record in ODIs has been equally impressive with 4313 runs at an average of 38 in 120 matches. The only flaw that Marcus Trescothick has is perhaps his habit of getting out early on after scoring flashy 20s or 30s. In 2003-’04 his form dipped slightly, but thanks to the patience of the selectors he was retained in the side. He proved his class once again by smashing centuries against South Africa and Bangladesh consequently.
