Of all the achievements in his career, Michael Vaughn would probably remember the 2005 Ashes victory under his leadership the most. He became the first English captain since Mike Gatting in 1986-’87 to have led the side to an Ashes win.
Michael Vaughn is a stylish right handed batsman who is calm and composed on the field while tearing the bowling of the opposition apart. Ever since he made his debut in 1999 against South Africa, Vaughn has been a classy batsman who has succeeded in amassing a flurry of runs. In his 64 Test he has scored 4595 runs at an average of 42.94. This includes 15 centuries and 14 fifties. His ODI career, though not as flashy, has been impressive too with 1730 runs at 28.36 from 74 matches.
Vaughn was made captain of England in 2003 after Nasser Hussain stepped down. He deserved this post and has led the team from he front ever since. However his own batting got a little affected in the initial days of captaincy, partly due to the pressure of captaincy and partly due to the unfair expectations made out of him. But the side benefited greatly and after he took charge, the team re-emerged as a strong Test side.
Gifted with immense cricketing talent and a brilliant strategizing mind, Michael Vaughn will surely finish his career as one of England’s most prolific cricketers, contributing invaluably to the team all along.
