If Abid Ali were to play modern day one-day cricket, then he would have attained double the popularity that he did when he played in the late sixties and seventies. He was cut out for the shorter version of the game with brisk pace in his bowling, athleticism and as a solid hitter of the ball lower down the order, Abid Ali was a cricketer who added vibrancy to the game. He made an impressive debut against Australia in 1967-'68 by taking 6 for 55 and also scoring 78 and 81 in the same series. He played a total of 29 Tests and 5 ODIs. He took 47 Test wickets and 7 ODI wickets and scored a total of 1018 and 93 runs respectively. His career came to a bizarre and abrupt end when he was mistaken to be dead in a surgery after Farokh Engineer informed the media that Ali had passed away.
