Amar Singh opened the Indian bowling along with Mohammed Nissar. The duo are considered among the best fast bowlers in a country where quality fast bowlers are a rarity. Unfortunately Amar Singh's stay with the Indian team was a short one as it was marred by the WWII and also by his untimely death at the age of thirty.
Amar Singh played in seven tests for India, taking 28 wickets.
Amar Singh had a much longer run in first-class cricket, which he played for nine years. In his 92 first class matches, Amar Singh took 508 wickets, at an average 18.35. Amar Singh displayed no less aggression with his batting as he did with his bowling. In 1932, Amar Singh became the first Indian to score a half century in test cricket, a record he achieved against England at Lords. The test match was a maiden one for India.
Amar Singh also holds the credit for being the first to complete the all-rounders double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the Ranji Trophy.
