It is a pity that most remember Chetan Chauhan only in context to Sunil Gavaskar. No doubt the duo formed one of the most successful opening pairs for India, with ten century partnerships between them; but Chetan Chauhan's grit and determination grant him enough merit for a special mention as a cricketer.
More than his technique, it was Chetan Chauhan's dogged persistence in sticking to his wicket that enabled him to serve as a good opening batsman. Chetan Chauhan played in 40 test matches and scored 2084 runs with an average of 31.57. He was unfortunate enough never to score a century in test cricket. In fact he remains the only test cricketer without a century to his name even after scoring over 2000 runs.
Chetan Chauhan shared many memorable partnerships with his illustrious opening partner, one of them being the 213 runs stand at Oval in 1979, which broke the record of 203 set by Mushtaq Ali and Merchant at Old Trafford in 1936.
Chetan Chauhan remained a prolific scorer in domestic cricket, where he scored some 11143 runs at an average of 40.22.
After his retirement Chetan Chauhan became a selector for North Zone, and also made a foray into politics.
