Krishnamachari Srikkanth was a flashy cricketer and his tendency to score runs quickly while opening the innings made him a very popular player. He made his debut for India in 1981 at age 21 against England. He used to open the batting with Sunil Gavaskar, but displayed a very different batting technique than the latter. While Gavaskar was more conventional, Srikkanth went after the bowling and hit shots all over the ground ensuring India were off to a flying start.
Initially he was a little restless and went for the big shots even at inappropriate times thus throwing his wicket away. However later on he matured and got a grip on his game, which along with his keen eye, gift of timing and sharp reflexes allowed him to play long innings of substance. He was an important part of the 1983 World Cup winning side. He was also made captain of the Indian team in 1989 and had moderate success while leading the side. However, his batting slowly started to corrode and he was consequently dropped from the side. In 1993 when he did not even get a call for his domestic side, he retired, aged 33. Currently he is a popular TV commentator.
