For a brief period in the mid 1980s Maninder Singh was India's spinning sensation. He almost single handedly ensured India's victory against England in 1986 and then had two very good home series' against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. However, he could not continue with his good run and soon lost focus. His bowling was not effective any longer and subsequently he lost his place in the side. He played 35 Tests and 59 ODIs for India, taking 88 and 66 wickets respectively. After retiring from the game, he was still actively involved with cricket and tried his hands at umpiring and commentary.
