He played in both 3 sponsored Tests against Bangladesh in July 2003, but then missed the most of the summer that followed because of an posterior impingement of his left ankle. Claimed the best figures in World Cup history when he took 7-15 against Namibia in Potchefstroom in February, part of 21 wickets in the tournament; only Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas (23) and Brett Lee (22) took more.
He also claimed his 250th one-day wicket during a haul of 5-37 against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September 2002.
Became only the eighth player in Test history to reach 400 wickets when he trapped the then Pakistan captain Waqar Younis lbw during the third Test in Sharjah in October 2002.
