Douglas Jardine, the infamous bowler of the Bodyline episode was from Scotland and so was the famous cricketer Mike Denness, who went on to captain England. The country's cricketing ties with England go back a long way. Some of the players like Dougie Brown have played for England before and are now representing Scotland.
The Scotland Cricket team, by winning the ICC Trophy in 2005, has earned a One Day International status for three years till the next ICC trophy. The team was runners up in the 2006 European Championship. So far Scotland's only participation in the World Cup has been in 1996.
In July 2006, Scotland played a one-day match against the touring Pakistan side. The match was unexpectedly closer than many had believed it would be. Scotland side remained loyal to their reputation of being fighters.
